Now You See Them, Now You Don’t: Michigan House’s New Hi-Res Displays Disappear When Not in Use

In mid-January of this year, we completed our installation of new displays in the Michigan House of Representatives. The new displays are 4mm high-resolution LED displays capable of showing not only the membership and voting information but any videos, photographs or documents that House might wish to display.

The displays were mounted and recessed into the wall. As part of a product re-design, the new modules that make up the display are significantly quieter and because of on-board fans, the heat buildup is much less. This benefits not only the chamber by lowering the ambient noise level but is also beneficial for the equipment itself as high temperatures can stress the internal control electronics and cause equipment failures.

These displays integrate very well with International Roll-Call’s xmLegislator voting and legislative management system in use in the Michigan House. Because of IRC’s alliance with Daktronics and the custom interface of xmLegislator with the Daktronics control hardware and software, xmLegislator is a powerful tool for controlling the sources of information and data displayed in the chamber, granting the user an unprecedented amount of flexibility in controlling the content of their displays without complex software changes being necessary.

One important feature of this installation is the custom designed fabric covering for each of the displays that match the color of the chamber walls. This helps to preserve the historical aesthetic of the House chamber while still utilizing the top-of-the-line display technology on the market. When not showing content, the displays are virtually invisible in the House chamber but are ready at the click of button to display vividly rendered text, photographs, documents and video presentations.

With the 2015 session underway, the new displays are now in use and the House staff—as well as those of us at Roll-Call—could not be happier with the way the installation turned out. The time-tested hardware longevity of these LED displays will serve the House well for the next 20 years and beyond. We wish our customers in Michigan well for the 2015 session and look forward to continuing to provide technological solutions for their legislative needs.
